LIVERPOOL FELL AT OLD TRAFFORD

LEAGUE CUP: MAN UNITED 1 - LIVERPOOL 0

Javier Hernandez placed the stability back to Manchester United after a very difficult week by netting the winning goal in a Capital One Cup tie with Liverpool. Hernandez who escaped from Jose Enrique to score from a Wayne Rooney's corner.

It is the Mexican's first goal of the campaign came early in the second-half, United manager David Moyes had barely got beyond the penalty area in his walk to the home dug-out. It meant it was easy to spot the Scot's celebration, at a strike that should at least quell some of the angst that built up following that awful hammering at Manchester City four days ago.

Shinji Kagawa and Nani were so alived, whilst stand-in captain Rooney buzzed around with menace. United held Liverpool at bay for what could turn out to be a very meaningful victory for their manager.

NETHERLANDS QUALIFIES TO 2014 WORLD CUP

WORLD CUP QUALIFIER: NETHERLANDS 2 - ANDORRA 0

Two goals by Robin Van Persie were enough to ensure Netherlands appearances at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil next summer. The Dutch, World Cup runners up in 2010, had to wait until the 49th minute to take the lead against Andorra who has lost all eight games, scoring none and conceding 24.

Van Persie`s second after a goalkeeping error means the Netherlands will take part in their 10th World Cup next year. Qualification represents something of redemption for Dutch coach Louis van Gaal who failed to steer the country to the 2002 World Cup in his previous stint as coach.

WELBECK'S DOUBLE HELPS ENGLAND WIN OVER MOLDOVA

WORLD CUP QUALIFIER: ENGLAND 4 - MOLDOVA 0

England cruised to the top of group H after a solid win over Moldova. Danny Welbeck turned hero as the Manchester United's striker scored a brace in the 4-0 win at Wembley Stadium. However, England manager, Roy Hodgson was left raging as a yellow card for two-goal hero Danny Welbeck will rule him out of Tuesday's crucial qualifier with Ukraine in Kiev.

Moldova were no threat and it was just a question of how long the hosts would have to wait for their opener. So, it took them just 11 minutes, Steven Gerrard's scored his first goal after three years to set England on their way to an anticipated triumph. And guess what? The goal was a result from a great combination between the skipper and Frank Lampard!

Moldova were in danger again in the 26th minute as Ricky Lambert steered the ball past the Moldovan keeper and became the first player to score in his first two internationals in 37 years. Danny Welbeck added England's third as he raced onto Lambert's long ball, skipped round Namasco and rolled the ball in.

Just after five minutes into the second half, Welbeck grabbed his second for the night when he neatly clipped the ball from Lambert's short pass. The win sent England to the top of the group, but a headache for the team manager who are running out of strikers for Tuesday match. Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Jermaine Defoe are all down with injuries.
