ENGLAND ADVANCES TO 2014 WORLD CUP

WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS: ENGLAND 2 - POLAND 0

Wayne Rooney scored his scored his ninth goal in 10 games to place England on the right direction to World Cup 2014, and Steven Gerrard added a second to send a warning to other qualified nation how dangerous the Three Lions can be in Brazil

It was a breathless and at times nerve-jangling confrontation with Poland at Wembley. Though, England finally got a relief when Rooney scored from Leighton Baines' cross four minutes before the break. There were more than 20,000 strong Polish supporter in the stadium to make the home team feel a little nervous.

England were then spurning a succession of chances. It took a captain's intervention from Gerrard two minutes from time to ensure England will take their place on the greatest stage next summer. ROONEY, TOWNSEND, SHINE IN ENGLAND'S WIN

Andros Townsend rewarded the faith of boss Roy Hodgson by scoring to help the Three Lions to a deserving 4-1 victory over Montenegro that leaves them just one more win away from booking their place in Brazil.

England opened the scoring in the 48th minute as Wayne Rooney finishes from close range after Poleksic's excellent stop from Danny Welbeck. Rooney stuck out a leg, brought the ball under control and from a central position calmly slotted it in.

The Three Lions got another goal in the 62nd minutes from comical own-goal from Boskovic as he puts Welbeck's cross past his own keeper. Sturridge's back-heel released Welbeck, whose cross was dangerous only for Boskovic, who, from 12 yards, somehow found the bottom corner when he was attempting to clear.

Montenegro pulled back with a goal 10 minutes later. Damjanovic sticks out a boot to meet Fatos Beciraj's shot, sending it past Joe Hart. Hodgson looked a little worried as he sat on the bench, chewing at his nails.

Handed his debut on the most tense of occasions, Townsend played with a freedom no one else could match. In the 78th minute, Townsend runs from just inside the Montenegro half, beating several men before hammering a low shot past Poleksic. A stunning goal in a brilliant debut.

As the game looked certain for another England victory, Ivan Kecojevic hacks down Sturridge in the box to give England another opportunity in the injury time. Sturridge insists on taking it himself and makes no mistake, sending the keeper the wrong way and rolling the ball home.

After the match, England will now need to beat Poland to get through to World Cup 2014. If they fail, they have to face the play-offs.

LEAGUE CUP: MAN UNITED 1 - LIVERPOOL 0

Javier Hernandez placed the stability back to Manchester United after a very difficult week by netting the winning goal in a Capital One Cup tie with Liverpool. Hernandez who escaped from Jose Enrique to score from a Wayne Rooney's corner.

It is the Mexican's first goal of the campaign came early in the second-half, United manager David Moyes had barely got beyond the penalty area in his walk to the home dug-out. It meant it was easy to spot the Scot's celebration, at a strike that should at least quell some of the angst that built up following that awful hammering at Manchester City four days ago.

Shinji Kagawa and Nani were so alived, whilst stand-in captain Rooney buzzed around with menace. United held Liverpool at bay for what could turn out to be a very meaningful victory for their manager.

NETHERLANDS QUALIFIES TO 2014 WORLD CUP

WORLD CUP QUALIFIER: NETHERLANDS 2 - ANDORRA 0

Two goals by Robin Van Persie were enough to ensure Netherlands appearances at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil next summer. The Dutch, World Cup runners up in 2010, had to wait until the 49th minute to take the lead against Andorra who has lost all eight games, scoring none and conceding 24.

WELBECK'S DOUBLE HELPS ENGLAND WIN OVER MOLDOVA

WORLD CUP QUALIFIER: ENGLAND 4 - MOLDOVA 0

England cruised to the top of group H after a solid win over Moldova. Danny Welbeck turned hero as the Manchester United's striker scored a brace in the 4-0 win at Wembley Stadium. However, England manager, Roy Hodgson was left raging as a yellow card for two-goal hero Danny Welbeck will rule him out of Tuesday's crucial qualifier with Ukraine in Kiev.

Moldova were no threat and it was just a question of how long the hosts would have to wait for their opener. So, it took them just 11 minutes, Steven Gerrard's scored his first goal after three years to set England on their way to an anticipated triumph. And guess what? The goal was a result from a great combination between the skipper and Frank Lampard!

Moldova were in danger again in the 26th minute as Ricky Lambert steered the ball past the Moldovan keeper and became the first player to score in his first two internationals in 37 years. Danny Welbeck added England's third as he raced onto Lambert's long ball, skipped round Namasco and rolled the ball in.

Just after five minutes into the second half, Welbeck grabbed his second for the night when he neatly clipped the ball from Lambert's short pass. The win sent England to the top of the group, but a headache for the team manager who are running out of strikers for Tuesday match. Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Jermaine Defoe are all down with injuries.

IT'S GOAL LESS AT MANCHESTER

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE: MANCHESTER UTD 1 - CHELSEA 1

It was an all-out performance by Wayne Rooney for Manchester United against Chelsea, the club he is rumoured to join. The game ended 0-0 but there is so much to talk about before and after the match.

Rooney was named in the first eleven despite suggestions that he is not in ideal relationship with United's new manager David Moyes. The match titled as the Chosen One against the Special One (Moyes vs Mourinho) can only be remembered for a number of penalty appeals. But none of them were given by the referee and both team failed to score in normal play.

Great defending from both teams had avoided real clear-cut chances. United midfielders were not creative enough to create real opportunities, while Chelsea started without a real recognised striker. With the result, Chelsea moved to the top of the table with 1 point more than Liverpool and Tottenham.

UNITED WINS ON SEASON OPENING

It's a winning Premier League start for David Moyes as Manchester United cruising to a comfortable opening day victory at Swansea City. Football pundits, writers and other club fans may question about new man at the helm but they may have forgotten that this is Manchester United.

Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck scored twice to ensure Moyes' reign started with a win. Braces from van Persie and Welbeck sent The Red Devils go top of the Premier League with an impressive 4-1 win at Swansea City. One of van Persie's goals is already good enough to be a contender for goal of year.

Van Persie's contribution was sublime, hooking in the opener before smashing home a 20-yard effort 17 minutes from time, before Wilfried Bony netted a consolation.

Unsettled Wayne Rooney made a 30-minute appearance as a substitute and was greeted warmly by United's travelling support despite his unrest at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney claimed the  assist for the Dutchman's second.

RVP DOUBLE FIRES MAN UNITED TO A GREAT START

Robin van Persie salvaged Manchester United's pre-season difficulties by delivering the goals that brought David Moyes his first silverware as manager. The Dutchman struck early in each half to allow The Red Devils to repel the threat of an adventurous Wigan and claim the Community Shield for the 20th time. Most importantly, it is the first trophy for Moyes, who is having such a huge responsibility after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson in May.

The man who scored 30 goals in his first season at Old trafford took only six minutes to get started with a superbly directing header that put United on the way to winning this trophy for a 20th time. His second arrived just before the hour, Van Persie instinctively cut inside and although it took a deflection off Perch to beat Carson, as the shot was on target, it meant last season's Golden Boot winner claimed a double, and Moyes claimed the trophy.

After all the unsettled Wayne Rooney's saga, the unforgiving transfer market and the unsure about the new management, there are some reassurances for all the Manchester United fans, that Robin van Persie is back at what he's good at – scoring goals and winning football matches.
